This article outlines the ten top open source solutions for backup, and explains why they are needed. It’s also surprisingly affordable at just $19.99 for a single license. No business can do without deploying standard backup software in its IT systems, as these help to prevent the loss of data. Get Backup Pro is easy to use, despite its powerful and extensive feature set, and its automated backup and sync features are an excellent addition for those who don’t want to have to worry about backing up manually. You can even back up data to CDs and DVDs, and Get Backup Pro will help you create bootable backup drives that will let you start up another Mac using an image of your own system. You can also choose to back up individual files and folders, and there are backup templates that make saving data from iTunes, Mail, Contacts, and more as easy as can be.Ī number of encryption options are available in Get Backup Pro to help keep your data secure, and it supports automated backups, so you can set it up once and leave it to do its thing. Get Backup Pro is another customizable backup tool that lets you create complete clones of your Mac’s system drive, or incremental backup archives that automatically look out for file changes and keep them up to date. And if you’re willing to pay more for its Advanced and Professional licenses, you can also add features like up to 5TB of cloud storage, automatic cloud backups, and enhanced electronic file security. What’s more, it also offers a cloud-to-cloud backup feature, which keeps copies of everything you’ve saved in OneDrive just in case Microsoft’s service fails.Īcronis also packs in its own antivirus and malware protections to keep your Mac secure, so there’s no need to worry about picking up viruses that could leave your data vulnerable. You can include or exclude individual files and folders to keep your backups fast and lightweight.Īcronis Cyber Protect Home Office supports all file systems used by macOS, including the latest APFS format, and it can help you restore all your data to a new machine if anything happens to your existing one. In addition to the ability to create complete drive clones, this intelligent data tool also lets you customize your backups to include only your most important data. If you’re looking for complete control over your system backups, you’ll want to check out Acronis Cyber Protect Home Office. And you can begin creating smaller backups free of charge. It can also recover data from Android and iOS devices, other drive partitions, Time Machine backups, and more. Its excellent recovery tools can help you restore files that have been lost or inadvertently wiped from your machine. If it’s data loss you’re worried about, Disk Drill has other features that also provide peace of mind. Disk Drill takes care of the rest, but remember that for complete system backups, you’ll need plenty of storage space. After the application is installed, simply select the “Byte-to-byte Backup” feature in the sidebar, connect an external drive, and start the backup process. Its clean and simple to understand design makes using Disk Drill incredibly simple. Its “byte-to-byte” backup feature makes an exact clone of your data, so that if anything happens to your primary storage drives, nothing is gone for good. Disk Drill is an all-in-one data tool that can not only help you recover files you’ve accidentally deleted from your system, but also backs up entire storage drives, flash memory sticks, SD cards, and lots more.

He was at the helm on the lavish 40th anniversary box set for Triumph's Allied Forces, issued this month as part of Record Store Day. Meanwhile, Curran remains busy with his own projects. “We’ll get it out one way or another,” he assures. “But to me, that was like, ‘Wow, without even trying, we sent this out and the music is resonating with people.’ So, I’ve got my fingers crossed, and I know Alex and I are both really proud of these songs and we want to share them with people.” “It’s quite far-mixed in the background, as you know people do that with music,” Curran says. She’s got a long career ahead of her, I think.”įans can get an additional taste of the new music from Envy of None via the Netflix series Tiny Pretty Things, which placed the group’s song “Liar” in one of the episodes from the first season. This girl plays 10 or 15 different instruments and we’re like, ‘What the hell is going on over there!’ So, she’s a real gift and I think she’s such a diamond in the rough right now. "Her little studio, she’s covered in instruments. “We do Zoom calls with her and she’s in Portland, Oregon," Curran says. She feels like she’s been here before on this Earth. He recalls that the guitarist told him, “I certainly have never witnessed someone this young. I think he went out of his way to really scratch an itch that he hasn’t played that way in Rush.”Ĭurran and Lifeson were both floored by Wynne’s creativity and depth. "We spoke about heavy, heavy guitars and he said, ‘There’s only really two songs, Andy, that I feel need that crunch and oomph. “He’s having a real fun time manipulating those guitar sounds," Curran adds. “I would say to him, ‘What did you do there? This sounds like a violin’ or ‘This sounds like a keyboard!’ He was like, ‘Well, I put this, this and this on it and I flipped it backwards.’ “He’s gone out of his way to process and put cool things on his guitar that you’re like, ‘Wait a second, that doesn’t sound like a guitar,’” Curran says. Similar to his previous solo work outside of Rush on 1996's Victor, Lifeson was keen to really explore and push the limits. That’s kind of what this project sounds like.” “It’s like, if you can picture maybe Massive Attack with a little bit of some electronic stuff with Nine Inch Nails influences, with this beautiful, fragile, sweet voice and some very, very dark heavy sounds. There’s some beautiful guitar that he’s played all over it – but full transparency, it’s not Rush and it’s not Coney Hatch,” Curran says. “I think there’s a lot of Alex Lifeson in these. The guitarist quickly gravitated to what he heard. He described the songs he was sending to Lifeson as “trippy and dark” with “pop elements” mixed in. Earlier this year, however, Lifeson revealed that he and Geddy Lee were continuing conversations about future potential collaborations.Ĭurran cautions that Envy of None is very different from the sound that Lifeson was known for in Rush. The recent wave of new recordings represent a significant step forward for Lifeson, who admitted that he initially played " very little guitar" in the wake of his longtime Rush bandmate Neil Peart's death. “If everything goes well, we’re hoping those songs might come out late summer or early fall.” “Those two, ‘Kabul Blues’ and ‘Spyhouse,’ at this moment Maiah is singing over them, so they’re going to be part of the Envy of None project,” he continues. “Now we have 10 songs in the can with this project called Envy of None. “He played on one track and one became two, and two became three,” Curran shares. Curran sent it to the guitarist and told him, “If you hear anything, why don’t you play on it?”įrom there, the collaboration began to blossom. He had been collaborating on songs with the Portland-based singer and Lifeson expressed interest in hearing the material. Wynne is the “diamond in the rough” who helped to spawn the new project, according to Curran. Lifeson and Curran are joined in Envy of None by guitarist Alfio Annibalini and vocalist Maiah Wynne, with additional musical contributions coming from drummers Tim Oxford (Arkells) and David Quinton Steinberg (Dead Boys, the Mods). He worked for the group’s management, handling A&R duties and coordinating their reissue program – a role he stepped away from in 2019. Known for his tenure as a member of ‘80s Canadian hard rockers Coney Hatch, Curran has been associated with Lifeson and Rush in recent years. This could leave you feeling like there is little to do but watch, but in practise it’s a small blessing, as trying to pick out individual fighters to direct them to their next target can be tricky. Each will pick out a sensible target for their class, unless ordered to do so, so there is no need to micromanage – an aspect from Homeworld 2 that has been brought into the first game. Left to their own devices, your ships are reasonably clever, too. The UI is also relatively clean, with clear construction and research menus using unit icons to differentiate them. It’s a quick and simple way of assessing how a battle is going, and for moving units long distances. To aid you further, hitting the spacebar zooms you all the way out of the battle so you can view the entire map, with units represented by various icons depending on their class. It makes controlling units in a three-dimensional space a doddle, which is no small feat. Units are controlled with a right click, either on a target or in the middle of space, with the latter bringing out a disc on the horizontal plane, the radius of which indicates the distance between the ship and its new location, while holding the left button and dragging changes the height. Each play a distinct role, and while a balanced fleet is essential, it can be achieved with different combinations. – and researching the required hull if necessary. Capable of producing most units, doing so involves constructing the correct module – fighter, frigate etc. Your Mothership is the focal point of the fleet, and its destruction means instant failure. As with most RTSs, gameplay is a balance between collecting resources, building units and defeating your opponent. Meanwhile, the core gameplay hasn’t aged at all. Brilliantly written, both start you off on the back foot, chased when you thought you were safe, and see you gradually retake the initiative. Without giving away too much, the stories both follow a similar pattern: in one, a civilisation is forced to journey across the stars to find the home of their ancestors in the other, after many years the same people go to war. Such is the case with Homeworld 1 and 2, brought back to your screens after over a decade and, while Gearbox has undoubtedly done a great job on the visuals and audio of these classic RTSs, it’s the original gameplay itself that makes these two worth playing after so long. When remastering a game, it no doubt helps when said game is already excellent. Time Cop (40G) - You need to complete the game on Normal Difficulty.Ģ0. Iwatani's programmers initially resisted the idea, arguing that the interludes added little to the game, but Iwatani ultimately won the battle. Iwatani dubbed these "coffee breaks" and imagined them as a means of enticing players to chomp their way to the next scene. Pac-Man's action is occasionally interspersed with simple cartoonlike interludes, where an enormous Pac-Man chases a terrified ghost across the screen. IT WAS ONE OF THE FIRST GAMES TO INTRODUCE CUT-SCENES. "The ghosts were inspired by Casper, or Obake no Q-Taro." 5. " Pac-Man is inspired by all the manga and animation that I’d watch as a kid," Iwatani told WIRED in 2010. Pac-Man's ghosts were also inspired by comic book characters. Iwatani later revealed that the power-up idea was inspired by Popeye, who often defeated his arch rival Bluto by eating spinach. PAC-MAN'S GAMEPLAY AND GHOSTS WERE INSPIRED BY COMIC BOOK CHARACTERS.Īs Iwatani continued to develop the idea of a game which involved eating, he added the concept of a maze, and then came the power pellet (or power cookie), a special item that allowed Pac-Man to eat his enemies. "It's not circular like the pizza, but I decided to round it out." And thus, Pac-Man was born. "In Japanese, the character for mouth is a square shape," Iwatani explained. But in a 1986 interview, Iwatani admitted that the legend was only "half true." The story was furthered by Iwatani himself when Pac-Man fever was at its height, he even posed with a half-eaten pizza for a publicity photograph. One of the great creation legends of game design is that Iwatani, while eating a pizza, looked down at the pie with a missing slice and used the outline as inspiration for Pac-Man's distinctive shape. PAC-MAN'S PIZZA INSPIRATION IS ONLY HALF TRUE.īy Official GDC - Flickr, CC BY 2.0, Wikimedia Commons Iwatani began thinking about ideas based around the word taberu, meaning "to eat." And gradually, the concept of a game called Pakku-Man (derived from paku paku, a Japanese slang word akin to chomp) began to form. I wanted to come up with a 'comical' game women could enjoy." "There were no games that everyone could enjoy, and especially none for women. "All the computer games available at the time were of the violent type-war games and Space Invader types," Iwatani said in 1986. In response, Iwatani began thinking about a concept which ran counter to those games. Japanese arcades of the late 1970s and early 1980s were dark, masculine places full of space shooting games inspired by the success of Space Invaders-including Namco's own enormously successful Galaxian. PAC-MAN WAS DESIGNED AS A RESPONSE TO SHOOTING GAMES LIKE SPACE INVADERS. Two years after Pac-Man's release in 1980, he designed Pole Position. In fact, Iwatani initially expected that he'd work on pinball machines, but instead ended up designing the Breakout-inspired paddle games Gee Bee (1978), Bomb Bee and Cutie Q (1979). When then 22-year-old Toru Iwatani started work at Namco in 1977, he had no particular interest in designing video games. PAC-MAN DESIGNER TORU IWATANI HAD NO TRAINING AS A DESIGNER OR PROGRAMMER. Here's a brief look at some of the fascinating facts behind Pac-Man's making, its impact, and its legacy. But Pac-Man's success was far from certain its designer initially had no interest in games, and the public reaction to it was initially mixed. Whereas most arcade games of the era involved shooting marauding aliens, Pac-Man looked like a miniature, interactive cartoon: a comical tug-of-war between a round, yellow character with an addiction to munching tiny white dots and a quartet of roaming ghosts with big, anxious eyes.Īs we now know, Pac-Man was a massive hit, and its grip on pop culture is still strong today. When Pac-Man emerged in the early 1980s, nothing else looked or sounded quite like it. Today, I am going to look at set 75974 Bastion. Hopefully, this will help AFOLs who are unfamiliar with the back story to feel more aware of the underlying backstory, and nature of the characters depicted in the sets. I have not spent a lot of time engaging with the franchise previously, so I have had my son Harry providing some commentary on the back story behind the characters. Over the last few weeks, we have been looking over the new line LEGO® sets based on the video game Overwatch. Funko hasn't omitted any detail since you can perfectly see the small ones attached to these joints, the small "caution" stickers or the blue light that gives a particularly successful effect to the face of the automaton.īastion holds his machine gun on his right arm while a little bird has landed on his other hand, symbol of the nature that had regained the upper hand during all the years that the robot has been on standby. In which I seek further advice from the game playing teenager around the house for a backstory, try my hand at knolling- only to fail, and then take every Overwatch player’s favorite Omnic out into the garden… The details of these different limbs are perfectly recognizable and he is in "sentinel" mode on the figurine. So we find on this pop a nice "little" robot with a humanoid look with its body, legs, arms (armed) and head!īastion is represented with three main colours: white, green and orange. This Bastion POP action figure is as good as the robot: a 15cm (6'') supersized figure representing the Overwatch character in its original skin. In short, it is better to have him in your team. The Bastion character in Overwatch has 3 strengths: he has a "reconnaissance" mode in which he uses his machine gun to shoot at the opponents he meets, he has a "sentinel" mode where he transforms into a fixed tower equipped with a powerful rotating machine gun allowing him to perfectly defend an area, and finally he has a "reconfiguration" mode allowing him to repair himself and recover his health points!īastion is therefore a very complete damage hero in the game, being able to alternate roles, more offensive or defensive, depending on the mode chosen. Bastion was born to fight, he knows how to storm his opponents as well as how to defend an area at any cost! Equipped with a very complete arsenal, its weapons are powerful and devastating. In combat, the sweet little robot turns into a veritable war machine: what it was designed for. Even though he feels that the looks of men on him are judged with hatred and contempt, he sets out to live as calm a life as possible, trying to escape the conflict with them. He wanders the world in search of this environment that surprises him every day. The war is over and Bastion seems harmless. The little robot was on standby for almost ten years, exposed to the weather and nature, Bastion was somewhat damaged but came back to life in one fell swoop. He is one of those laboratory robots that turned against humanity and formed the rebel troops that revolted against their creators.Īlmost all of these units were destroyed in the aftermath of the Omnium crisis, but Bastion seems to have been forgotten for years. Bastion is an automaton, symbol of the omnium crisis. |
